History of Foursquare Day
Foursquare Day, also known as 4sqDay, is considered the first social media holiday. Foursquare (officially Foursquare City Guide) is a location-based smartphone app and social networking service where people "check-in" to places like restaurants and pubs. Launched in 2009, it has changed over time but remains a way for patrons and businesses to connect with each other. Some of the early features include the ability to earn "badges" and become the "mayor" of a location. In 2014, a related app called Swarm was launched by parent company Foursquare.
Foursquare Day was devised by Nate Bonilla-Warford, an optometrist and social media fan from Tampa, Florida. A lover of numbers and dates like Pi Day, Bonilla-Warford chose April 16 as a holiday because the square of four is sixteen. Foursquare was firstly mentioned in a blog post on November 21, 2009. On March 12, 2009, he pitched the idea for the date on a forum on Getsatisatis.com, and On March 22, he wrote a proposal for his day Blog. He met Jessica Barnett and she helped promote the day, and on March 26, Foursquare announced the day on Twitter.
Foursquare Day was first celebrated in Tampa with Bonilla-Warford by a group of its users in order to spread this day to all people around the world. It was originally designed to be just a one-day subscription to Foursquare. On the first holiday, there were 550,000 registrations and 20,000 new users registered. In its second year, an online poll made "Foursquare Day: When the World Is Your Place" the official tagline. First, businesses provide "money" for those who want to join. Today, holidays are celebrated in different ways in different places, and besides registration, there are other events such as parties and speeches.
