Holy Wednesday

Holy Wednesday is also a sacred and important holiday in the liturgical calendar of the Church for hundreds of millions of Christians worldwide.

Holy Wednesday is a holiday within Holy Week - the last week of Lent before Easter for Catholics. In Christianity, Holy Wednesday is also known as Spy Wednesday or Holy Wednesday. Holy Wednesday is usually celebrated on the fourth day of Holy Week.

The Origin and Meaning of Holy Wednesday

Holy Wednesday and Holy Friday are considered two days of fasting by Christians. The reason people fast on these two days is because Holy Wednesday is also considered the day when Jesus was betrayed by Judas - a disciple (secret spy) among the disciples.

In the Middle Ages, Holy Wednesday was popularly known as Spy Wednesday because Judas was like a spy. He knew that the high priests wanted to kill Jesus and wanted to take advantage of the opportunity to make money, so he secretly betrayed Jesus for the price of 30 silver coins.

Today, many churches of different Christian denominations celebrate denominational restoration on Holy Wednesday.

On Holy Wednesday, the Gospel gives instructions from Jesus regarding the preparation of the place for the Last Supper. We too, continue our preparations, looking forward to great days ahead.

How to observe Holy Wednesday
