Origin of Malbec World Day
The founder of Malbec World Day is the Wines of Argentina. Their goal in creating this holiday was to make their country one of the best wine producing countries in the world. And that goal seems to have already been achieved. The holiday continues to gain popularity in many parts of the world. And Argentina's wines are increasingly being claimed as some of the best in the world.
The Wines of Argentina is an organization responsible for the production of Argentine wines known to the world. In addition, on April 17th, 2011, they started World Malbec Day. Lis Clement, who was the director of Marketing and Communications, was the creator of World Malbec Day thinking the celebration, would help establish Malbec as one of the finest wines in Argentina. Celebration is especially guaranteed as Malbec wines are of great quality with surprising variety and flavor. The celebration was able to pave the way towards making Argentina one of the main centers of medicine in the world.
These days, more than sixty cities around the world hold events to celebrate World Malbec Day. They conduct activities that not only showcase Malbec's wines, but also showcase Argentinian cuisine and lifestyle. These events are coordinated by the Argentine Foreign Office. Celebrations around the world in different cities are made so that each city can be creative in the way they carry out their celebrations. Although Malbec was first grown in France, the peak of its development was reached in Argentina. It was then able to become one of the key players in the international wine industry.
Why is Malbec World Day?
Malbec originates and is cultivated for a long time in the southwestern part of France. The resulting wines, named "from the Cahors" after their regional name, have gained increasing recognition since the time of the Roman Empire. Their prestige was solidified in the Middle Ages and clearly and specifically recognized in modern times.
Conquering the UK market is an important step towards the appreciation of the breed in the UK and around the world. As phylloxera devastated viticulture in France in the late 19th century, "Cot" slowly fell into oblivion. However, the culture of Malbec appreciation was improved and put the foundation for the development of Malbec Argentina some time later.
Malbec was brought to our country having derived from France in 1853 by Michel Aimé Pouget (1821-1875), an agronomist hired by Domingo Faustino Sarmiento to run the Quinta Agronomica de Mendoza.
According to the French model, Quinta Normal had founded to incorporate new variations as a way to promote the national wine industry. On April 17th, 1853, with the support of the governor of Mendoza, Pedro Pascual Segura, a bill was submitted to the Provincial Legislature establishing the School of Agriculture and the Quinta School of Agriculture. On September 6, 1853, the House of Representatives enacted the bill into law.
By the end of the 19th century, viticulture had undergone an exponential development at the hands of Italian and French immigrants, and Malbec, too, was rapidly adapting to various terrors due to our geography offers and is even better developed than its original land. By this way, Malbec has become Argentina's leading cultivar after too much efforts and hard work.
Pouget and Sarmiento's efforts for Mendoza's Quinta Normal played an important role in that process. For Wines of Argentina, Malbec World Day not only represents the development of Argentina's wine industry, but it is also the starting point for Malbec's growth as an iconic cultivar and the international leader of Argentina's viticulture.
