However, there is some data indicating that, in the 1930s, the first commercially available corn chips were called Fritos Corn Chips. And there is a story about Charles Elmer Doolin. In 1932 he bought the recipe for corn chips, a hand-held potato masher, with $100 that he borrowed from his mother. Doolin founded The Frito Company, a fried corn snack brand, right in the family's kitchen.

Towards the end of the year, the company expanded production lines in Houston and Dallas. The Frito Company headquarters also moved to Dallas to take advantage of the city's central location and better raw material availability. In 1945, Frito Sales Company was formed to separate sales from production activities. In 1950, Fritos became popular throughout the United States and it was sold in all 48 states. According to Statista, Frito-Lay with sales of $4.81 billion in 2020, has become the best-selling potato chip brand in the US.
