National Doughnut Day
(Also known as National Donut Day)
National Doughnut Day is observed next on Friday, June 6th, 2025 (197 days from today).
The first Friday of June every year is celebrated as National Doughnut or Donut Day in the United States. This holiday is a continuation of Doughnut Day when members of the Salvation Army provided donuts and coffee to members who served in World War I.
National Doughnut Day celebrates the donut and honors the Salvation Army Lassies. The Salvation Army Lassies were women who served donuts to soldiers during World War I.
History of National Doughnut Day
The Salvation Army created National Doughnut Day in 1938 to honor the women who served donuts to soldiers during World War I. National Doughnut Day began as a fundraiser to serve for Chicago's Salvation Army as well as help the poor during the Great Depression.
In 1917, the original "Salvation Army Donut" was served by the women belonging to the Salvation Army. It was during World War I that the Lassies Salvation Army went to the front lines of Europe. Homemade food, provided by these brave volunteers, is a morale booster for the military.
Donuts are often cooked with oil inside the helmets of American soldiers. American infantrymen were often referred to as "hunters." The more standard spelling of this word is “donut”.
