April 16th every year is National Eggs Benedict Day, a day for special American food including a hard-boiled egg, an English muffin and Canadian bacon topped with Hollandaise sauce; however, it was understood by a misconception. Some have suggested that the name is derived from Benedict Arnold, the traitor of the American Revolutionary War, but its origins are a lot more complicated than it seems.

History of National Eggs Benedict Day

There are many myths about the creator of Eggs Benedict and almost believed that the earliest one is in the eighteenth century. Pope Benedict XII was obsessed with eggs. He loved an egg dish so much that he kept ordering it over and over again. It is said that despite his illness, he still craves and loves this egg dish never abated. Since that time, his name and the dish have been associated.

Another story claims that Eggs Benedict emerged in 1894 when a Wall Street broker named Lemuel Benedict created it in an attempt to rid himself of a hangover. When being stayed at the Waldorf Hotel, he ordered some dishes such as avocado toast, poached eggs, bacon, and Hollandaise sauce in hopes of concocting a cure. This dish was loved and impressed by Oscar Tschirky and then it was added to the menu after Lemuel Benedict.

In 1967, another origin story was created for Eggs Benedict. Before his death in 1920, a man named Edward P. Montgomery wrote a letter to The New York Times Magazine to confirm that he was responsible for this dish. He confirmed and called Commodore EC Benedict as Commodore EC Benedict inventor and recipe from his mother, therefore, complicate the true origin of the dish.

Today, there are many ways to prepare Eggs Benedict that vary by location. It is very easy to realize the change from Canadian bacon to regular bacon and from English muffins to toast, however, the concept remains the same. In the modern age of a burgeoning brunch culture and food bloggers thriving, Eggs Benedict is as popular as ever, regardless of who actually created it.
