History of National Librarian Day

The first major libraries in the United States were mostly privately owned and required an entrance fee or a membership fee to gain access. The concept of a free public library persisted into the late 1800s. In the early 20th century, after the library catalog was standardized with Dewey Decimal System and other practices, thousands of new branches across the country were rapidly expanded by the public library. By 1900, the range of libraries had also expanded, with many rooms offering interlibrary reference and lending. During the Great Depression, libraries played an important role with struggling families looking for a cozy haven and free entertainment.
At the present, libraries are not only place for supplying reading chance for people but also a repository of knowledge. To keep up with changing technology, library now are constantly upgrading by adding extra audiobooks, e-readers, free computer skills classes, and access to free online resources. There were also many language and citizenship classes offered with the access of many helpful tools, technology such as 3D printers and computers, and free workshops on a variety of interests and life skills at many public libraries. They provide a quiet place for relaxing during hot or rainy days without charge and they are considered as a safe destination for children and teenagers.
