History of National Seed Swap Day
The National Seed Swap Day was first held in 2006 and on the last Saturday of January every year. The first official Gardener's Magazine seed exchange was held in Washington DC on January 26, 2006. Kathy Jentz, the magazine's editor and publisher, founded This Day. Growing in popularity, the Day has become a national day of celebration. Seeds are considered one of the first commodities to be valued and traded. Seed swap is an event where growers from different regions of the country meet to exchange seeds.
The seed exchange can be arranged online or by mail depending on the geographical location. Gardeners who exchange their excess seeds directly are also growing in popularity. In part, this is done to increase people's interest in organic and heritage gardening or heirloom plant variations. They exchange the best trees to improve biodiversity and to create an optimal form of recycling.
How to Celebrate National Seed Swap Day
You can trade your seeds with the best seeds of other gardeners in seed exchange events to make the variety better and improve its standard with organic variations. If you are new to gardening, learn the details of sowing seeds from those professionals. You can even organize a local seed exchange event near your location and help others trade seeds. Share your seed exchange celebrations and photos of different seeds on social media using the hashtag #NationalSeedSwapDay.
