Shopping Cart Day
Shopping Cart Day is observed next on Wednesday, June 4th, 2025 (192 days from today).
Shopping Cart Day on June 4th calls for a celebration of the wheeled baskets we use to make our way through supermarket aisles. The inventor of the shopping cart wanted to increase the time customers spend in the supermarket to maximize overall profitability by expanding the vehicle to temporarily transport items in the store. The original design included baskets and transportability elements. Many other points related to ease of towing; wheel rotation and weight of the material must also be considered. In the early days, shopping trolleys were not popular as many men found the idea too 'feminine' for them, while many women thought that shopping carts would be too similar to pushing a stroller.
History of Shopping Cart Day
Shopping Cart Day on June 4th celebrates the invention of the efficient shopping cart, a huge success in making shopping more convenient. Shopping trolleys are not needed to increase supermarket profits. Supermarkets started becoming popular in the 1920s, but people didn't start using trolleys until the late 1930s. Instead, customers had to carry wire baskets that would become too heavy after purchase a little. This leads to a limited number of supermarkets sold. Seeing this trend, Sylvan Goldman, an American businessman and owner of the Humpty Dumpty supermarket chain in Oklahoma came up with the idea of creating a shopping cart.
Goldman inspired a folding chair. He placed a wire basket on a folding chair, rolling it around the office to see how it worked. Realizing he might be on to something, Goldman enlisted the help of his employee and mechanic, Fred Young. This briefcase was designed before the final product was invented in 1937. It was a metal frame that held two wire baskets and Goldman called it folding baskets. However, it would be a few years before the shopping cart really exploded because customers at the time believed it was too bad or too annoying. Once a master of solutions, Goldman hired attractive male and female models to use trolleys in its store, and it wasn't long before the public started using them, too. Over the next few decades, shopping cart design will undergo a number of changes. Some designs include a child seat while others have a foldable rear for increased storage and space saving.
