March 2nd each year is World Teen Mental Wellness Day, a day aimed at “raising greater awareness of mental health issues among adolescents, as well as providing education on eradicating stigma around preventive mental health.” More than ever, young people are particularly struggling with issues such as loneliness, anxiety and depression.
History of World Teen Mental Wellness Day
Hollister Co., belongs to Abercrombie & Fitch Co., is creator of World Teen Mental Health Day, which purpose is to improve knowledge of mental health problems for teenagers and provide education about eradication as well. Eliminate stigma around preventive mental health. With this date, Hollister Co. is committed to supporting mental health prevention and self-care for young people around the world. Teens are encouraged to use this time to practice self-care and silence their self-doubt. When this day was founded, Hollister also created a project named the Hollister Confidence, a year-round initiative dedicated to promoting youth confidence and wellness globally.
The World Health Organization estimates that 10–20% of adolescents experience mental health conditions, most of which begin at age 14 and go undetected and untreated. If left unaddressed, these mental health issues can follow them into adulthood, affecting their physical and mental health, and narrowing their chances of living a fulfilling life. Adolescents have to face with too much changes in physical, social, and emotional that make them more vulnerable to mental health problems. Poverty, violence and abuse are affected to mental health.
There are a number of mental health conditions that teenagers face. Emotional disturbances include depression and anxiety. People with affective disorders may also experience extreme irritability, frustration, anger, mood swings, and emotional outbursts. Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and conduct disorder are some typical behavioral disorders. Eating disorders associated with mental health include anorexia nervosa, bulimia, and bulimia.
Some other mental health conditions include risky behaviors such as substance abuse and sexual risk-taking and psychosis-like hallucinations and delusions. The most serious problem associated with mental health is suicide, which is the third leading cause of death for people between the ages of 15 and 19. As the result, we need to improve the knowledge about youth mental health, which is Word Teen Mental Wellness Day today.
