History of Red Hat Society Day
Red Hat Society Day on April 25th celebrates the first meeting of The Red Hat Society in 1998. The association is a social organization for women over the age of 50. The first founder of this organization was Sue Ellen Cooper lived in California. In 1997, she gave her friend a red melon hat as a birthday present. Along with the cantaloupe, she gave her friend a copy of a poem by Jenny Joseph. The poem, titled "Warning," begins with the lines, "When I'm an old woman, I'll wear purple with a red hat that doesn't go and doesn't suit me." Many of her friends asked for red hats for their birthdays and they ended up buying purple clothes to match the poem. On April 25th, 1998, they all gathered for a tea party that is chosen as the first meeting of the Red Hats.
Today, society focuses on promoting attachment between women. Initially, only women over the age of 50 could participate, but now the organization is open to women of all ages. However, members still adhere to the poem and any member under the age of 50 must wear a pink hat and lavender-colored clothing while those over the age of 50 can wear red hats and colored clothing.
